Seminar on “Greenhouse Gas Emission Disclosure Guideline for Macau Hospitality Industry”

Hotel industry is an essential pillar for local economy in Macau but it is also one of the major sources of greenhouse gas emissions. In response to the challenge of global climate change, the Institute of Energy, Environment and Economy, Tsinghua University, in collaboration with LCGHDA, organized a seminar on “Greenhouse Gas Emission Disclosure Guideline for Macau Hospitality Industry” at MGM COTAI function room this afternoon, with the aim of formulating a set of guidelines on GHG emissions accounting and reporting for Macau hotel industry,  to improve the management of GHG emissions and reduce energy consumption within hotel industry.

The seminar invited representatives from hotel industry and academia to explore how to promote the implementation of carbon disclosure on GHG emissions in the hotel industry and how carbon disclosure can be utilized to facilitate the low-carbon development. This seminar also introduced the background, objectives, methodology and preliminary findings of this project, with the experience sharing and feedback from the participating hotels.

Zhou Jian, Assistant Director of Institute of Energy, Environment and Economy, Tsinghua University and Deputy Director of Tsinghua University’s Center for Ecological Civilization, as well as Keith Lei, Vice Director of LCGHDA and Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Sustainability of MGM, said in their speeches that the Macau SAR Government attaches great importance to the issue of climate change and has made the control of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as one of its key tasks. It is hoped that through this project, an open, transparent, and credible carbon information disclosure platform for hotels’ GHG emissions can be established to provide hotel industry with a tool that can quantify, evaluate and improve the performance of GHG emissions, and at the same time provide public information to understand the actions taken by the hotel industry to cope with climate change. They appreciated the support and cooperation of the participating hotels and looked forward to have more hotels joining the program in the future to contribute to the sustainability of Macau.
