Seminar on “Carbon Emission Accounting and Decarbonization Development for Hotel Industry”

This afternoon, the seminar on “Carbon Emission Accounting and Decarbonization Development for Hotel Industry” was held at MGM COTAI, which was organized by Low Carbon Green Hotel Development Alliance (LCGHDA), co-organized by the China Green Building and Energy Saving (Macau) Association (China GBC), and supported by MGM.

Earlier, LCGHDA signed the “MGM COTAI Carbon Accounting Project Cooperation Agreement” with China Green Building and Energy Saving (Macau) Association, and joined hands with the Green Building Research Center of China Society for Urban Science, to compile a carbon accounting report applicable to the operation stage in accordance with national standard, which focuses on the carbon emissions caused by energy use, calculating the carbon emissions and analyzing the results of the calculation. Thus, it was hoped that this report would become a pilot within the industry and provide a standardized accounting method for reference. Based on the results of the report, the seminar shared the calculation of carbon emissions and how to apply them and promote the industry’s understanding of its own carbon emissions, and facilitate the consistency of carbon emission accounting methods within the industry.

Mr. Cheng Dazhang, Professor of Tongji University and Advisor of Green Smart City and Digital Chemistry Group of China GBC ; Mr. Guo Zhenwei, Deputy Director of Green Building Research Center of China Society for Urban Science; and Mr. Zhang Zhidong, Vice Director of China Green Building and Energy Saving (Macau) Association were invited to share their views. Other guests included Mr. Choi Chi Fong, Acting Director of Licensing and Inspection Department of Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO),  Mr. Ng Si Io, Director of Environmental Planning department of Environmental Planning and Assessment department of DSPA; Mr. Albert Chuck and Mr. Lei Ka Hang, Director and Vice-Director of LCGHDA, together with representatives from academic institutes, heads of relevant hotel departments and representatives from universities, with around 60 participants in total.

Prof. Cheng Dazhang introduced the objectives, significance and general accounting methods, such as emission factor, mass balance and measurement methods, and analyzed the types of data to be collected and its necessities, pointing out the difficulties in data collection and suggestion for improvement in line with past practical experience in Mainland China. In the past, traditional data collection methods faced the problems of inefficiency and high cost, but through the implementation of digital and intelligent management system to monitor and record the data, carbon accounting will no longer cause additional cost to enterprises. Carbon accounting is an important part of corporate social responsibility, and can also be a good tool for self-diagnosis and self-improvement.

Mr. Guo Zhenwei made a cross-comparison with the domestic and international carbon accounting methods, and emphasized the differences of the standards and calculations. He also introduced the domestic standards of buildings carbon emissions calculation, as well as the boundaries, such as HVAC, domestic hot water, lighting and elevators, and explained a tool developed by the Green Building Research Center of the China Urban Science Research Institute to assist enterprises calculate their carbon emissions effectively.

Mr. Zhang Zhidong interpreted corporate sustainability strategies from the perspective of corporate’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance, as well as the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by the United Nations. He also summarized the disclosure regulations and requirements for listed companies to help them understand the purpose and significance of disclosure, taking MGM as an example to show participants MGM’s efforts and achievements in this regard.

After the seminar, guests visited the green facilities in MGM COTAI back of house area. Led by MGM’s Facility Management department, they visited the power system, HVAC system, water supply and drainage system, and water reuse facilities etc. Through the detailed introduction of many facilities and the sharing of green philosophy and practical experience, this tour had provided reference information for the guests.
