“Greater Bay Area is China’s most vibrant economic region. Doing business here means that it is essential for us to demonstrate social responsibility and take a leadership role in the transition to low-carbon economy. This is the first time that the alliance hosts a sub-forum at MIECF empowered by both width and depth of knowledge in environmental protection. In the future, the alliance will continue to create a uniting force to develop Green Tourism in the Greater Bay Area and do our part to contribute the country’s ‘3060’ Dual Carbon Goal”, said by Kenneth Feng, President of LCGHDA.

Four top environmental experts from the Mainland China and Macau were invited to share their insights on dual-carbon practices at the sub-forum, which was moderated by Liu Bin, Deputy Director of Institute of Energy, Environment and Economy, Tsinghua University. The speakers covered a wide range of areas in China’s carbon market construction and operation, providing participants with a deeper understanding of the development in the dual-carbon era.

Regarding the progress of the construction and operation of China’s carbon market, Wang Tie, Deputy Director of the Department of Climate Change of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, People’s Republic of China, proposed that to promote a complete “incentive-constrained” carbon market economy system and voluntary emissions reduction trading mechanism is an important part for reaching dual-carbon goal, which will motivate more industries and enterprises to take part in the greenhouse gas emissions reduction actions, and also arouse low-carbon awareness within the whole society.

Zhou Jian, Associate Dean of Institute of Low Carbon Economy, Tsinghua University, pointed out that the challenges faced by many hotels in low-carbon transition are mainly due to the lack of awareness and management, thus he suggested a number of transformation paths to the industry, including improving equipment efficiency, implementing demonstrations of new types of applications, such as “light storage and charging” in the hotel clusters, as well as supporting the practice of voluntary emissions reduction trading mechanism in order to accelerate the low-carbon transformation of China’s energy economy.

Li Zongjin, Chair Professor of Faculty of Innovation Engineering of the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), and recipient of the Arthur R Anderson Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Scientific Research from the American Concrete Institute (ACI), explored various aspects of the concrete’s sustainable development in the sub-forum, introducing a variety of building materials that can replace concrete and citing a number of scientific cases of  application; at the same time, he shared a number of solutions for sustainable concrete construction and more effective utilization of building materials, opening up a new horizon for sustainability of construction industry.

Zhao Yue, Business Director of Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute (SMEDI), introduced the planning and development ideas of environmental protection in line with the dual-carbon era, and shared successful case about wastewater treatment and solid waste recycling integration in Shanghai, Nanjing, and Suzhou to provide solutions for environmental protection industry.
